Located in the heart of Lincoln Park, Newberry Academy has proudly served the students and families of Chicago since 1858, and the Blue Willow Studio in room 211 is proud to be a growing part of that heritage. Established in 2012, the Blue Willow Studio provides enriching visual arts instruction for young artists ages 3 to 14. Classes visit the studio once or twice a week for a total of 60 to 120 minutes of creative and stimulating visual arts instruction overflowing with opportunities ripe for self-expression. While there is always room for creative interpretation, most projects are deeply rooted in the coupling of Art History with core subjects. Examples include but are not limited to:
- Learning about astronomy while studying Van Gogh’s Starry Night
- Discovering the causes and effects of erosion while creating chalk pastel landscapes of the American Southwest reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe
- Developing an understanding of scale and ratio while creating perspective drawings inspired by the architectural renderings of Frank Lloyd Wright
- Making connections between the science of color and light and the use of pigments while dabbling with pointillism like Georges Seurat
The goal of the studio is not only to produce confident, creative artists, but also to cultivate a sense of leadership and responsibility in these young artists of all ages.
So, thank you for taking an interest in the arts program at Newberry Academy! We hope you take the time to explore the outstanding work of our students (and staff) and like what you see.
